Members of the Firefighters Association of the State of New York and the Ossining Fire Department held a live demonstration on Monday to showcase the dangers of improperly deep frying a turkey.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires.

Firefighters tossed a 14-pound frozen turkey into a vat of boiling oil to show the horrors of what can happen when deep frying goes wrong.

"It's very important to follow the instructions that are given with the deep fryers. Keep them away from your house, keep them off your deck, make sure the turkeys are completely dry and not frozen," said Robert Outhouse, of the Firefighters Association of the State of New York.

Officials also added that fire prevention is also just as important while cooking inside the home.

"We do tell people to not wear loose garments…when they are cooking to reduce the chances of them getting burned," said Fire Prevention Officer John Simkins, of the Ossining Fire Department.

Officials also advised those in the kitchen to store flammable items away from fires, to tuck in the handles on hot pots and pans to prevent children from grabbing them, and to always keep an eye on anything in the process of cooking.

In the case of any emergency, be sure to call 911.
