The Department of Sanitation and local nonprofits are celebrating the second annual Thrift Store Day.
Officials are encouraging New Yorkers to "think secondhand first." The stores are not only a good place to find a bargain, but they are good for the community and environment, they say.
Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia says secondhand stores create jobs and training opportunities. They also provide a wide range of community services.
The day is part of the Reuse! NYC program.
City officials say 16 million pounds of waste were diverted from city landfills to goodwill and thrift stores in the last year alone.
