A community center complete with affordable housing is coming to Coney Island, Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NYC) announced Thursday.
The facility, planned for Surf Avenue, will be complete with two pools, a basketball court and a fitness center. The city sold the vacant plot of land to developer Larry Hirschfield. Bloomberg said the city will put up $5 million for the project and the sale of low and middle-income housing at the complex will pay for the rest of the development.
Community leaders say it's the latest part of plan to revitalize the gritty area near the boardwalk.
