A nearly $3 billion project in Ronkonkoma has now been put on hold after some opposition. 

The developer of the Midway Crossing air terminal and convention center says it’s now in the state Legislature's hands.

"This project will create jobs investments on Long Island and Long Island companies, and residents will benefit from this,” said Plumbers Local 200 business manager Richard Brooks.

Brooks was just one of the union representatives at the Suffolk County Legislature committee meeting Friday where traffic was a major topic - for which officials say this development will cause.

“There are always pros and cons to anything when you're going to do something new, and I think it is a good idea for them to step back and take a look at what people are saying,” added Shawn Renee, of Ronkonkoma.

Some say the benefits outweigh the concerns when thinking about what this project will bring to the area. The project included a life sciences center, commercial district, retail shopping, sports and entertainment complex and a convention center and hotel.

Two possible resolutions are now on the table for the project. One would make the Chicago-based developer “the project master developer," putting them in charge of all facets of the development. The second option would form a development corporation that would include members chosen by Suffolk and Islip Town officials.

The Suffolk County Legislature committee is expected to make its vote on Wednesday.
