Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. has endorsed Congressman Charlie Rangel for re-election in the upcoming Democratic primary.
Redistricting has stretched Rangel's longtime district in Harlem and Washington Heights to include parts of The Bronx. The new District 15 now has a large Latino presence, which could be a decisive factor at the polls.
Former borough president Fernando Ferrer has endorsed Rangel's opponent, Bronx state Sen. Adriano Espillat. Ferrer was the city's first Latino Democratic party nominee for mayor in 2005 and remains an active force in city politics.
