The first day of public school is Thursday, and the state Department of Motor Vehicles is reminding drivers and pedestrians to be cautious on the roads.
At Atlantic Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue in Cypress Hills, traffic is already heavy.
Officials say nearly 50,000 drivers statewide illegally pass stopped school buses every day.
The DMV is urging drivers to slow down in school zones, stop for buses and watch out for children in the street and crosswalks.
Parents in Cypress Hills say they’ve already talked with their children about street safety.
“Grab a guardian when crossing the street, especially in this intersection. It’s very notorious,” one father said.
Another added, “Drivers need to be more cautious on how they’re driving, throughout the whole day, not just the time of school hours.”
Pedestrians are also reminded to stay alert and avoid distractions like phones when crossing.
