Inspectors from the city’s Department of Buildings were at Luna Park in Coney Island on Wednesday to ensure the rides are ready and safe for New Yorkers.
John Mingoia, amusement rides supervisor for the DOB, has been in this line of work for 10 years and prides himself on not missing any little details.
From testing chlorine and pH levels in the water to checking weight capacity on ramps, rides and walkways, the thorough inspections can last anywhere from one hour to three days.
“I don't want to get that phone call, God forbid, that a child is hurt, or it could be my kid,” said Mingoia. “I don’t want that to happen.”
Part of the inspection includes members of the DOB riding the attraction to ensure that everything is in working order.
“They’re great partners,” said Alessandro Zamperla, president and CEO of Central Amusement International of the city’s buildings agency. “They want us to make sure… that everything is safe so everybody can have fun.”
That fun starts on Friday, April 1 when Luna Park will open its doors to the public.
