Parents at P.S. 230 in Kensington are demanding that the Department of Education (DOE) immediately remove light fixtures that contain the dangerous chemical polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB).
The DOE had admitted that hundreds of schools have lighting fixtures that contain the chemical.
The chemical, which may cause cancer, has been banned since 1979, but many buildings have light fixtures that contain the chemical, which were installed prior to the ban.
The DOE says that it has a 10-year plan to remove the chemical, but parents say they want the chemical out of the schools immediately.
