School is out for the summer, but school cafeterias and some new locations are buzzing with kids in need of healthy meals.The Department of Education is serving food at schools, libraries, public pools and housing projects to children 18 and younger. Breakfast is Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and lunch is from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. The program runs until the end of August.
The DOE says the goal is to provide access to low-fat, low-sodium and reduced-sugar food year-round. Experts say it may go a long way in cutting the childhood obesity rate.
