Bailey,
an 8-month-old German Shepherd, adventured an estimated 10 miles across
two states and one river all on his own.
He was
found by Dr. Matthew Morgan, chief of surgery at the Veterinary Emergency and
Referral Group. Dr. Morgan says what happened with Bailey was a miracle.
“This
could’ve gone really, really poorly for Bailey so it’s more the people
he met along the way were the right people,” said Dr. Morgan.
Dr
Morgan, along with locals who tried helping the pup along the way, say Bailey
escaped from a yard in Red Hook on May 8. Bailey was caught on camera swimming
through the East River in Manhattan, where he was rescued by a paddleboarder who helped
free him.
Authorities
tell News 12 that Bailey was then spotted at the entrance of the
Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and even made his way over to the Holland Tunnel, where
the dog was caught on camera running through the tunnel.
After
a week of travel for the dog, News 12 was told that Bailey was
rescued by the Port Authority police, when he finally made his way to Dr.
Morgan, unfortunately with some injuries.
Harriett
Zucker was Bailey’s trainer before his great escape, and is working to find him
the perfect home following this intense adventure.
