Driver of deadly hit-and-run in East New York still at large as community members advocate for change

Community members say the intersection is dangerous and enough is enough. One says that safety improvements like speed cameras and red-light cameras are needed.

Police have identified the victim of a fatal hit-and-run Thursday night in East New York as 36-year-old Nyron Shaw.

News 12 spoke with his brother Imran Shaw over Zoom from his home in North Carolina.

Imran Shaw called his brother fearless with a big heart.

While community members say the intersection is dangerous and enough is enough.

"You don't feel safe. There's also a lot of transportation and people in bikes and scooters," said Reyna Sanchez, from East New York.

Miriam Duriex says there's a crash every single day.

"We had one every day. We had one Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday," says Duriex.

Duriex is asking for safety improvements, including speed cameras and red-light cameras.

News 12 witnessed a vehicular crash while on the scene.

News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation for a statement:

“We mourn with the community and will review the location of this tragic crash for any potential improvements. NYC DOT implemented safety enhancements near Broadway Junction along Atlantic Avenue, and the area is slated to receive additional pedestrian upgrades as part of the City’s overall plans for the transit hub and surrounding areas.”

The NYPD says the suspect was last seen driving a gray sedan.
