Millions will be traveling this Memorial Day weekend.
AAA says the national average for gas prices is $3.57 per gallon, which is about a dollar less than this time last year. However, the increase in demand may push prices slightly higher compared to a few days ago.
In the Bronx, gas is $3.37 per gallon at the Gulf Station on Webster Avenue. In Brooklyn, gas is $3.35 per gallon at the 76 Station on Mother Gaston Boulevard in Brownsville.
AAA projects that over 42 million people will travel this weekend, which is a 7% increase over last year. Air travel remains a popular choice at 11% higher than last year, but at a price. The airfare to top destinations is 40% more than last year.
Other travel, such as on trains, bus and cruises, is also up 20% over last year.
The great majority of travelers, about 87%, will get behind the wheel. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced temporary lane closures on the state's highways would be suspended starting Friday morning. She says this ensures travelers can reach their designation safely and with minimal delays. Those temporary closures will start up again early Tuesday morning.
Experts say the worst time to drive Friday is 3-6 p.m. They also say they expect minimal traffic on Saturday and Sunday.
