The New York City Department of Sanitation is sending a clear message to residents - use a trash bin or face a fine.

Since November, the city has required homes with up to nine residential units to use garbage bins no bigger than 55 gallons. These bins are also required to have secured lids.

“It’s really simple: You have trash, you have to have it in your bin on collection day," said Javier Lojan, the acting commissioner of DSNY.

But many residents tell News 12 they weren't aware of any new mandate.

“No, not yet. I'm not aware of no new rules yet," said Keran Phillip, an East Flatbush resident.

Since Jan. 2, DSNY says the department has issued close to 500 tickets to residents who have left their trash in garbage bags by the curb. The first fine is for $50, the second for $100 and the third is for $200.

Those who don’t want to receive a summons can purchase an official NYC trash bin for $45 or $53 depending on the size.
