Despite high hopes they would make it through the recession, business owners in Dumbo have fallen victim to the ailing economy.
Throughout Dumbo, businesses are closed and for rent signs are up. In September, the owner of Modern Tots, a chic kids clothing store, says she was busy enough to hire more staff. Today, Modern Tots has gone out of business.
However, Modern Tots is not alone. A number of other businesses in the neighborhood have also been forced to close. Journey Home is closing in Dumbo, but will reopen in another location. Owner William Rohl says the area has become too desolate.
Other business owners agree that Dumbo needs to generate more business. "It definitely needs more restaurants," says Bruce Marsh, a former business partner for Modern Tots. "It needs a destination that is going to make people want to come here."
