The Dyckman Running Club hosted their second annual memorial run to pay tribute to fallen NYPD detectives Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora.
Rivera, 22, and Mora, 27, were both killed while responding to a domestic call last year.
Officers and running clubs across the community gathered for a moment of silence, followed by a group stretch and then a run to celebrate the lives of the two detectives.
Organizers say Rivera had a special connection to the Dyckman Running Club.
“When we first started the running club, Jason Rivera was one of our founding members. He actually joined us to get in shape for the NYPD…He talked about bridging the gap between the NYPD and the community. This event does just that,” says Elvin Adams, co-founder of the Dyckman Running Club.
Co-founder Cesar Baez says he worked closely with the NYPD to curate the race's route.
"We used to run, and I used to occasionally bump into Jason there while he was just training for the academy on his own. It always just sinks into me a little bit more because we're doing that route. I just visualize him running it by himself,” he said.
Participants hope that uniting for the event will help Rivera and Mora’s memory lives on.
"I feel like running is a good outlet. It gives people the opportunity to come together. It means a lot to be out here today,” said Transit District 12 Explorers sergeant Aleski Lebron.
