Students and staff at the Performing Arts and Technology High School in East New York are gearing up to bring back their theater program with a musical.
The cast put on a one-night, one-show performance of "Encanto" in the school’s auditorium on Friday. The musical is based on the hit Disney movie that focuses on a family with magical powers – except for one girl, Maribel.
Theater department director Simba Kalonji says it’s the first musical to be performed in the space in over 10 years after budget constraints and COVID-19 broke the program down and forced them to do smaller and less elaborate performances.
