Police are now calling the death of a man a homicide, days after he was found unresponsive inside his apartment.

The man has been identified as 51-year-old Justin Tetro, who lived at 21 Pennsylvania Ave. in East New York, according to police.

Officers were called to the apartment building around 11:04 a.m. on Dec. 11 for a wellness check. When they went inside Tetro’s apartment, police say they found him unconscious and unresponsive, with injuries to his head and neck.

Emergency medical crews responded, but Tetro was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the time, police had not classified the death as a homicide. That changed the following day.

The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner reviewed the case and officially ruled Tetro’s death a homicide on Dec. 12, police confirmed.

Neighbors told News 12 that Tetro had a roommate, though police have not said whether that person was home at the time.

So far, no arrests have been announced, and police have not released details about how Tetro was injured or how long he may have been dead before officers arrived.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police as detectives continue working to piece together what happened inside the apartment.
