A Brooklyn ninth grader was stuck at home for nearly a week after her school bus stopped showing up, leaving her unable to attend classes at her specialized school in Manhattan.
Danity, who lives in East New York, attends the Lorge School in Chelsea, a specialized school that serves students with disabilities.
Her mother says the school bus that normally picks her up each morning never arrived last Friday, and it didn’t show up Monday or Tuesday either.
The school bus finally arrived early this morning, after News 12 spoke with the mom and officials
“She loves school. She doesn’t like to be home,” her mother, Cynthia Cotta, told News 12. “No bus, she’ll be home. The best the teacher could do is send me work. But it’s not the same.”
Cotts says she received a text last week informing her that her daughter’s route had changed and that a new driver would start picking her up on Friday. But the new driver never showed up.
When she called the bus company, Leesel Transportation Corp., and the Office of Pupil Transportation, she says she was told the route had become overcrowded after four new students were added and there was no clear timeline for when Danity’s transportation would resume.
Council Member Chris Banks, who represents the area, says he’s calling for an investigation into what happened.
“This is a grave injustice,” Banks said. “This child should be in school. And if it was the other way around, where the mother was keeping her home, ACS would’ve been called.”
Danity’s mother says the missed school days have taken a toll on her daughter, who suffers from anxiety and ADHD. “Each day she misses, it’s not good for her,” she said.
In a statement to News 12, a spokesperson for the Department of Education said:
"Every family deserves safe, reliable, and equitable transportation to and from school. We have confirmed with our vendor that there is space on this route, and the family will be provided service beginning tomorrow morning. We will track the route via GPS to monitor the route going forward. As always, we will work diligently to resolve any issues families have with their services so that every student gets to school on time.”
