A gathering in an East Williamsburg neighborhood Saturday marked the Meeker Avenue plume officially being added to the Superfund National Priorities List.
The plume is an underground reservoir of pollution and toxic materials that runs through Northern Brooklyn. With the new superfund designation, a full investigation of the Meeker Avenue plume can now take place.
Residents at the Cooper Park Houses say the pollution and toxic chemicals they've been forced to live amongst has impacted every part of their lives for decades.
Now, the us Environmental Protection Agency will work to remediate the pollution caused by the plume and drastically improve the health of those residents who live on top of it.
The environmental advocates and elected officials who rallied said the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has identified chemicals in such plumes are commonly found in metal degreasers and brake cleaner.
