A standoff with a former corrections officer on Eastchester Road ended Wednesday morning, police say.
According to police, the retired corrections officer and military veteran at the center of the standoff, Joe Principe, was taken by ambulance to Jacobi Medical Center. He is in critical condition.
The standoff began Tuesday when police say Principe barricaded himself inside his apartment and hung an American flag upside down in his window, a symbol for distress. According to police, Principe threatened to blow up the house if authorities tried to enter. It is not clear whether Principe was armed or had access to explosives.
Sources tell News 12 The Bronx Principe was on medication and had been drinking when the situation unfolded. They also say he had recently been released from jail.
