More Flock cameras are coming to Edison. The mayor says it will be the first township in the state with the license plate readers at every entrance and exit.

Edison already has about 20 Flock cameras. They are in office parks, neighborhoods and shopping malls. They log each passing car’s license plate and store the information for seven days.

“I have not noticed it," said Edison resident Anthony DeAmorin. "I will pay more attention here on out.”

Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan says his detectives have solved more crimes since the department adopted Flock cameras.

“A car comes into our township that is stolen. It alerts our patrol officers and we can track them much easier," said Bryan.

The council approved nearly $590,000 in asset forfeiture funds for the 90 cameras in a 6-1 council vote.

“This is another way for the government to spy on us, and I don't want to take part in it," said councilman Richard Brescher, the lone "no" vote. He says he sees the benefit of solving crimes, but at the price of privacy.

“It's intrusive to the public," Brescher said. "I don't want to be tracked. I don't want my family tracked.”

This money will also purchase a public safety drone that the mayor says can reach any location in Edison in 45 seconds.
