A Crown Heights music teacher is using classical music as a way to help his students tap into their full musical potential.
Edward Gordon is the head of the Nubian Conservatory of Music. He teaches more than a dozen minority students from Brooklyn how to sing in up to seven different languages, including Italian, Latin and German.
Gordon, who has taught music for more than 30 years, says he hopes his conservatory opens doors for his students who might otherwise be closed to them.
"I want them to reach a little higher because they can," he says. "They have the ability. The voices are there, and I'm just trying to give them some options."
Gordon says he is looking to expand the program to a place where students can receive a college degree in music. He also says that students in the community who want to learn classical music should not have to leave their community to do it.
