A bust of National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden briefly appeared at the Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument at Fort Greene Park, but it has since been taken down.
According to the website ANIMALNewYork, a trio of artists and some helpers hauled the 4-foot, 100-pound sculpture into the park early Monday morning.
Snowden leaked classified NSA documents that exposed covert surveillance programs used by the United States government.
The anonymous artists' goal was to honor Snowden and those who sacrificed their safety in the fight against modern-day tyrannies, ANIMAL says.
The statue was later covered up with a blue tarp and then removed by the city's Parks Department and police Monday afternoon.
ANIMAL says that although the statue was removed, the artists have a few backup ones.
Police are investigating the incident.
