Elected officials and advocates are calling on Gov. Kathy Hochul to put the New York Heat Act into the 2024 state budget, following the heavy rain and severe flooding that New Yorkers experienced on Friday.

The act would help New York begin to step away from an outdated gas pipeline network while also helping state residents save $75 off of their monthly energy bill on average. 

"Friday's experience was not a storm, only heavy rain," said Sen. Liz Krueger, who is the sponsor of the act.  "The infrastructure isn't there to meet our needs."

Advocates add that a delay in this process will only make the inevitable transition more expensive for the state.
