Elected officials are calling for answers after a 61-year-old woman was killed while crossing the street.
Police say Estelle Davis was found last Friday around 2 p.m. on Van Sinderen Avenue and New Lots Avenue and was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Assemblymember Charles Barron and Councilmember Inez Barron say that based on what they know, she was hit by the truck of a company that was subcontracted by Con Edison to do some repairs under the sidewalk.
They say once those repairs were finished, the truck was backing up off the sidewalk and into the street, just as the woman was in the crosswalk.
Officials say her death could have been prevented if there was someone from that company standing behind the truck and directing it to make sure cars and other pedestrians were safe.
News 12 reached out to Con Edison, which subcontracted the project.
A spokesperson told News 12 in a statement, “We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Estelle Davis. An independent contractor, Vali Industries, was performing construction work for us at the time of this tragic accident. This incident is under investigation.”
News 12 reached out to Vali Industries. News 12 was told there is no comment at this time.
The Brooklyn district attorney's office is also investigating the incident.
