An EMT took the stand Monday in the trial of a NYPD officer accused of first-degree manslaughter in the death of Fermin Arzu.
Officer Rafael Lora is accused of shooting Arzu inside the man's minivan on May 18, 2007. Lora pleaded not guilty and claims the shooting was in self-defense after Arzu allegedly hit a parked car and dragged Lora several feet. Prosecutors say Lora shot Arzu five times in the heart after the crash.
The EMT testified he was one of the first on the scene after the shooting. He says he treated Lora on the scene, and that the officer didn't appear to have scratches on him. The EMT also testified that it didn't appear Lora had been dragged, and that the officer declined a neck brace.
Forensic scientists are expected to take the stand later Monday. Lora is expected on the stand later in the week.
