An East New York resident says the area has become a dumping ground in recent months without any success in getting the city to keep it clean.
"There's garbage and toilets everywhere," says Gio Carey. "It's disgusting and I mean, enough is enough."
Carey has lived in the neighborhood for 20 years. While illegal dumping has always been an issue, she says it has gotten worse in the last few months. She showed News 12 pictures of trash at multiple locations across the neighborhood.
"Here during COVID, everything is about sanitizing and hand washing. But when it comes to our neighborhood, it's this all the time," said Carey.
Several mattresses and old furniture were also seen at Cozine and Fountain avenues. Carey says it's difficult to report the issue to 311 as they need a specific address.
"If I call Sanitation and blame it on someone else's property, that is so unfair," she said. "They have to fight that violation."
A representative from the Department of Sanitation tells News 12 residents should dispose of garbage properly. They also said mattresses must be wrapped in plastic to be picked up, adding residents can call 911 if they see illegal dumping in progress.
Carey says she'd like to see a program that's a bit more proactive in keeping the neighborhood clean.
