Sears is closing its doors for good at its Fordham Road location, but not without one final sale that kicked off Thursday.
The retailer has been at 404 E. Fordham Road since 1981. A spokesperson for the department store says store closures, including this one, are part of a series of actions Sears is taking to reduce loss of revenue and cover continuing expenses.
Approximately 91 employees will be affected by the closure; some will receive severance and others can apply to other Sears and Kmart stores, according to the retailer.
While some Bronx residents are saddened by the loss of the longtime anchor store, others are looking forward to deep discounts on everything from clothing to appliances as Sears tries to unload as much inventory as possible.
"Since I was small, my mom used to bring me here," said shopper Charlyne Henry. "I've come to get that last deal."
The store plans to close its doors by the end of November. The nearby Sears Auto Center on Third Avenue will remain open, for now.
