A former Suffolk lawmaker and doctor pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor charges on Friday.

William “Doc” Spencer pleaded guilty after an investigation found he falsified a police report and patronized a prostitute.

He was sentenced to six months in jail and then another six months of interim probation.

Back in October 2020, Spencer was arrested and charged with trying to trade oxycodone pills for sex with a prostitute. Police say Spencer was actually texting an undercover officer, not the prostitute. The girl Spencer thought he was texting had actually died already from an overdose.

"She mattered," said the victim's aunt Charmaine De Rosa. "And he didn't matter to him. He's a doctor, he was a county official and he took advantage of his power. He could have helped her and he harmed her."

The judge ruled that if Spencer does not get in any trouble in the next year, the felony conviction will be dropped. He will also complete 420 hours of community service.

"The benefit of this plea is it gives doctor spencer a chance at redemption," said Anthony La Pinta, Spencer's attorney. "A chance at hopefully being able to return to society as a practicing physician and resume the life that he had."

Spencer's medical license was suspended as of Friday.
