Residents at the NYCHA Carey Gardens building in Coney Island tell News 12 they don't have full access to their own backyards.
All but two benches are closed off by fencing and scaffolding.
People like Fe Figueroa say there was scaffolding for years that was recently taken down, only for new scaffolding to be put up.
“That scaffolding we didn’t have a problem because it wasn’t fenced, but this one is terrible," said Figueroa.
Figueroa says the benches are a place where residents would spend time with one another.
“They play Domino, they have their lunch there at the little tables and everybody will have fun. But now they're homebound because they can't go there," said Figueroa.
Fences also block entrance to the playground.
“This is abuse, this is abuse because we have a lot of children that live here. This is a playground where children come after school. They hang out with their parents," said Figueroa.
NYCHA tells News 12 the areas will only be closed temporarily for safety purposes during construction.
People like Ruth Sano say it's frustrating, but understandable.
"It’s also for safety, we got to be safe. I’m hoping they hurry up, that way I can hang out," said Sano.
NYCHA sent News 12 a statement:
"Shedding that had been installed by a vendor for Hurricane Sandy-related repairs was removed upon completion of that work, allowing for necessary utility work to be completed by National Grid. New shedding has now been installed by another vendor for required Local Law 11 facade repair work, which is currently estimated to be completed before the end of the year."
