A disturbing video shared exclusively with News 12 shows a pet cat being fatally attacked by a dog outside the cat owner's home in Brighton Beach.
The video shows the dog lunging at the 1-year-old cat, named Botas, on Brighton 10th Street. The cat was sitting within the property line when the attack happened, according to the owner.
"Botas was sitting within the property lines. He was not sitting on the street," said neighbor and animal rescuer, Usman Shughtai. "Watching this tragedy happen has been very painful. I just wasn't myself after seeing it."
Neighbors and animal activists say the most troubling part of the video is that the dog's owner appears to be nearby during the attack and may have encouraged it.
"He was just chilling outside," said animal activist Ksenia Potapova. "Not bothering nobody and he brought his dog to kill the cat purposely and that's what I saw on the video."
Botas, whose name means "boots" in Spanish, was well known and loved on the block.
"I wish you could have seen Botas soaking sun right there on the front porch of the house and I guarantee you, you wouldn't be able to pass by without petting him," said Shughtai.
The incident happened in May, but the video surfaced recently after another neighbor raised concerns when his own cat came home injured several weeks ago.
"My cat came home with a broken front leg," said Cesar Perez. "I started to think maybe the same thing happened to my cat."
Perez said a veterinarian confirmed his cat had likely been attacked.
The cat's owner said he attempted to file a police report in May but was turned away. He now plans to return to the 60th Precinct with the video footage, hoping police will open an investigation.
"All we want is for police to take the report and investigate," Shughtai said.
The NYPD said the death or injury of an animal caused by another animal is considered a civil matter.
