Experts say pets at risk during poor air quality conditions

In Williamsburg, dog owners have taken to hanging out inside Boris and Horton, a new location to the popular dog cafe in the East Village.

While many people are worried about their health, experts say that the poor air quality conditions can cause serious consequences for pets.
"Just like in people, the amount of irritation in the air can affect the lungs and make it really difficult for our pets as well," said veterinarian Dr. Julie Watiker. "The main thing we’re concerned about is pets who already have heart disease, any type of respiratory condition such as cats with asthma and dogs with allergic conditions.”
Dr. Watiker says if you notice your cat or dog gagging or coughing to contact your veterinarian immediately.
“The best thing you can do is keep them indoors, we want to really limit the activity we’re spending outside," said Watiker.

Susan Anderson, director of Disaster Response for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommends keeping apartment windows tightly closed and using an air purifier indoors.  She sa
Anderson also recommends that pet owners consider building an emergency animal evacuation kit to keep in their home. She says the kit should include important supplies such as pet medical records, food and water, medication, blankets or towels and sleeping crates.  Anderson says such items could be crucial if pet owners ever need to evacuate their homes.
