As tax season approaches, experts offer Brooklyn residents tips to ensure they don?t fall victim to Internet scams.Phishing is the practice Internet bandits use who send unsuspecting e-mails to trick people into revealing personal and financial information. Experts say at this time of year, scammers send phony e-mails claiming to be part of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The fake e-mails offer tax refunds in exchange for information.Finance Committee Chairman David Weprin says simply opening some of these e-mails can make some computer information vulnerable. IRS officials say they will never initiate tax discussions over e-mail, therefore, all such e-mails claiming to be from the IRS are phony.
