Experts say seal season has begun in Coney Island.
Some people may have already seen a gray seal pup resting on the Coney Island beach shoreline recently.
Just weeks after baby seals are born, they’re left to figure life out on their own. Part of that comes with resting on the beach sand.
“It's perfectly normal,” said Hans Walters, animal curator at the New York Aquarium. “We have several species of seals that come into our waters in the colder months. Gray seals are one. Harbor seals are another. They tend to show up around November when the water starts to get really cool, and then they move back up north when the water starts to warm.”
Walters said seals in the area are a mere sign of a healthy ocean.
If you happen to spot one, stay at least 150 feet away from the mammal. Call the New York Stranding Response Hotline at 631-369-9829 only if you suspect the seal to be sick or injured.
If you see one while in the ocean, swim away.
