Parishioners of a Bay Ridge church that has been standing for more than a century are rallying to save the building from the wrecking ball.
Members of the Bay Ridge United Methodist Church, also known as the Green Church, say their pastor informed them the church is on the market. They also say Rev. Robert Emerick told them the place of worship may be torn down and turned into condos.
Critics of the decision have formed the Committee to Save the Green Church. Members say they've written countless letters to the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission and elected officials. They want to have the site deemed a landmark. The committee plans to hold a meeting next week to discuss its next course of action.
Councilman Vincent Gentile is working with the group to get an appointment with the landmarks panel.
