Fallen Spring Valley firefighter Jared Lloyd has received one of the highest honors awarded to volunteer first responders in New York.
Lloyd was awarded the Firefighters Association State of New York 2022 Firefighter of The Year Award at the group’s 150th annual convention.
Lloyd was given the honor posthumously after he helped save more than 100 residents and another firefighter from the massive fire at the Evergreen Court Home for Adults in Spring Valley a year and a half ago.
"I have a hole in my heart that will probably never close,” said Sabrail Davenport, Lloyd's mother.
Davenport and one of Lloyd's two kids, Darius, accepted the award on his behalf.
"You guys recognize the impact that he made on that particular day,” she added.
Two rabbis have been accused of starting the fire when they were cleaning the ovens at the facility ahead of Passover. They've both pleaded not guilty and are asking to have the charges dropped.
The fire sparked a massive investigation into the village's code enforcement and led Rockland County to take over the village's Building Department. Two former members of that department are also facing charges.
