A family in Hunts Point is worried for their safety over the rundown condition of their apartment.
Tasha Garcia says her first-floor apartment at 720 Hunts Point Ave. is in desperate need of repair. She says there's water damage and other issues that have made it so bad she can't stay in her own bedroom.
There are 40 open violations on the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development's website, with the majority of them listed in Garcia's apartment. Issues include mold, water leaks, hot steam and fault electricity.
"When the manager came in here with my super, he had the audacity to tell me that this is nothing," says Garcia. "That he has seen worse."
In 2016, two girls in the building died after a malfunctioning radiator burned them and blasted steam.
"We are scared - because we smell fire sometimes - we smell gas a lot of the time, everything, the steam - how it gets hot in here, it's scary - it's really, really scary," says Garcia.
Garcia is preparing for her housing court appearance on April 19. She says her ultimate goal is for the landlord to put her family in another apartment while the necessary repairs are made to her current apartment.
