Relatives of a woman who was struck and killed by an MTA bus spent Thanksgiving sharing memories of and mourning the mother of six.
A BM1 bus struck and dragged Rukhsana Khan as she tried to cross in the middle of Ocean Avenue near Avenue K at around 5 p.m. Wednesday. She had been going to pick her youngest son up from school at the time of accident, according to relatives.
Her teenage son said he started to worry when his mother took a long time to return. "I saw the ambulance," said Zakria Khan, the victim's son. "I saw her shoe on the floor right in front of me," he said, lowering his head.
The victim's son said his family was supposed to be having Thanksgiving dinner in New Jersey. He had then planned to go shopping with his mother.
Instead, the family spent Thanksgiving making funeral arrangements. The victim's husband plans to send her body back to Pakistan for burial.
"She was an angel," said friend Faiza Iqbal. "She was always smiling."
No charges have been filed against the bus driver, and authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
