The family of a fallen soldier from Marine Park will begin a scholarship in his name.

Military officials say Marine Lance Corporal Nicholas Whyte was fatally shot by an Iraqi sniper in Ramadi Wednesday. Family members say Whyte died just two days shy of his 22nd birthday. Despite opposition from his family, Whyte joined the Marines in 2003 after graduating from James Madison High School.

A wake for Whyte will be held Thursday at the Guarino Funeral Home. A funeral is scheduled for Friday at the Bedford Central Presbyterian Church.
