The family of Detwan Hannah is speaking out after coming face-to-face in court with the man accused of recklessly causing his death last month in Brooklyn.
According to police, the incident happened on Sept. 15 at the intersection of Malcolm X Boulevard and Macon Street. Investigators say Hannah, 35, was riding a dirt bike when he fell into the roadway.
Police allege that 28-year-old Keon Davis, who was driving with a suspended license, attempted to pass an MTA bus and struck Hannah while he was lying in the street. Davis, in the car with his child at the time, remained on the scene.
Hannah was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
During a court appearance Thursday, a judge ruled that Davis will remain held on Rikers Island pending further proceedings.
Sources tell News 12 that at the time of the incident, Davis was driving a Mercedes-Benz registered in Georgia. He was driving at 42 mph in a 25 mph speed zone when passing the bus.
He’s facing a slew of charges, including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Hannah's family says they are frustrated by the possibility that the accused could face what they view as a relatively light sentence if convicted.
"My daughter's father needs justice. Justice needs to be served," said Tawana Brown, the mother of Hannah's children. "It's not right that if he gets five years, two or three years, his kids can still see him. My kids don't have their dad."
Davis could face a maximum sentence of between five and 15 years if convicted.
