The family of a 77-year-old man who was slashed in an East New York apartment building says the New York City Housing Authority is partly to blame.
Lonie Singleton was rushed from the Linden Houses to Brookdale Hospital with slashes to his face and throat on Oct. 19.
His wife, Patricia James Singleton, says she had just stepped out only to have a neighbor call and say three men were attacking her husband with a box cutter.
She says the men were hiding in the stairwell and assaulted her husband when he was walking back to the apartment. Police have confirmed that two of the three suspects were arrested in the assault.
Singleton says the incident could have been avoided because she had been complaining to NYCHA that people were harassing her family since last November.
She says she is scared for her life and the lives of her daughter and grandchildren.
A NYCHA spokesperson tells News 12 that the “safety of our residents is paramount. NYCHA takes harassment complaints seriously and works closely with residents and NYPD."
NYCHA added that it has offered the family an emergency transfer, which Singleton says her family will be taking.
