A Brooklyn-based company is helping local businesses grow fresh produce in the comfort of their own establishment.

Farmshelf gives access to its own herbs and greenery through hydroponic farm walls.

"Farmshelf allows you to grow food wherever you are," says co-founder JP Kyrillos. "It's an automated, indoor, smart farm and they get to utilize the produce. It's as fresh as possible and it grows all year-round."

The goal of the business is to eliminate food waste, plastic packaging and travel time for produce by placing the miniature farms directly in the places that use them.

Sahadi's in Industry City is a gourmet-market specializing in Middle Eastern dishes. It uses two farm shelves.

Employees say their interest in Farmshelf came after having trouble finding certain herbs in the city that only grow overseas.

"It allows us to harvest edible flower, micro-greens, rare herbs that takes a lot of trouble from us to source these ingredients and it's like we can focus on the execution," says manager Mike Orlando. "And we always know that when we get them they're at the peak of their freshness."

The smart farms are only available for businesses, but co-founders of the company say they're planning to create a consumer model.
