Senior citizens in a Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment complex complain that faulty elevators leave them trapped in their own homes.
The elevator at 260 Herkimer St. has been out of service since Aug. 13, and it is not expected to be fixed for another two weeks.
"I stop about three or four times before I get to my floor, rest, thank god and think how many more do I have to go,? says Margaret Bonaparte, who leaves on the 6th floor of the building.
Down the street, at 280 Herkimer St., the elevator hasn?t been working for a month. Elderly and handicapped residents who live in the building say the lack of functioning elevators makes them feel like prisoners.
"I stay in most of the time because I don't feel like walking back upstairs," says Ruth Dunham.
The management company says it will start operating the elevators during weekdays for seniors and people with disabilities until the elevators can be fully repaired.
A representative of the management says they are currently waiting for replacement parts to arrive in order to fix the faulty elevators.
