Canarsie Pier was the scene of a rescue involving first responders who were trying to save a 25-year-old man found in the water on Tuesday morning.
Eyewitnesses reported that the man had jumped over the railings. They say a bystander went in after him.
Video footage shared by someone on the pier around 10:30 a.m. captures the scene. It shows people fishing and enjoying the views and turns into a chaotic rescue operation.
The footage shows first responders surrounding the man, who was struggling in the water. Rescuers placed what appeared to be a ladder in the water, and with their assistance, he was able to climb up and exit safely.
Witnesses on the pier mentioned that the man was accompanied by friends, but details regarding the events that led to his fall remain unclear.
The 25-year-old was transported to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition.
"We can't stand up and see somebody drowning and take out pictures and stuff; we're trying to save him," said one fisherman. "It's really like a family out here, you know."
News 12 reached out to the National Park Service for a statement regarding safety measures at the pier and is still waiting to hear back.
