Firefighters responded to a fire on the fifth floor of 78 Mulberry St. at 3:48 a.m. Fire officials say 25 units and 106 personnel responded to the two-alarm fire and that heavy clutter at the building complicated the response.
Authorities say one person was found dead at the scene and another died after being transported to a hospital in critical condition. Two people with minor injuries and one firefighter refused attention, they say. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor burns.
"Our hearts are with the families of the victims, those injured, and our FDNY heroes who responded to the tragic fire in Chinatown," Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a tweet. "We will always be there to support the Chinatown community, and we stand ready to assist in the recovery however needed."
