The FDNY hosted a block party in Bedford-Stuyvesant Saturday to celebrate the department's 150th anniversary.
Tents with instructional materials and games were set up for adults and children. Kids also got to climb into fire trucks.
"We thought we would celebrate our 150 years with the community," said fire chief James Leonard. "Bring them out and have hot dogs, hamburgers ... but at the same time, we're pushing fire safety, health safety, CPR safety."
There was even a contest to see who could put on heavy fire gear the fastest.
"Firefighters are very important because when people are in very damaged car accidents they help them get out without getting them hurt," said a young Brian Torres.
The event was the first of 12 block parties that the FDNY will host this summer.
