The FDNY has promoted an African-American woman to lieutenant for the first time in more than a decade.
Tracy Lewis, of Engine 222 in Bed-Stuy, has become only the second black female in the department's history to receive the rank. She is among only nine African-American women firefighters currently in the FDNY.
Lewis joined her colleagues at the Christian Cultural Center Wednesday for a promotion ceremony.
Lewis kicked off her career with the FDNY 17 years ago in its cadet program. She was then part of the first class of EMS workers to be promoted to firefighters back in 2000, and has served Brooklyn ever since.
The first African-American woman ever to be promoted to lieutenant was Ella McNair back in 2002. She was also a Brooklyn resident who worked out of the same battalion as Lewis.
