A wake was held Sunday for a firefighter killed in a Crown Heights blaze that officials say was started by a boy.
Mourners paid their respects to FDNY Lt. John Martinson, 40, at Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home on Staten Island. He leaves behind a young son and pregnant wife.
The decorated former police officer was found unconscious Thursday in a family's 14th-floor Bedford Avenue apartment. Examiners said he suffered smoke inhalation and burns, some to his face.
The 18-year FDNY veteran was among more than 100 firefighters at the scene. Officials confirmed that a 6-year-old boy placed wrapping paper from a gift atop a lighted stove, which the family had been using to warm the apartment. The boy panicked and put the paper under a bed when it caught fire, officials said.
No charges are expected to be filed in the incident.
Martinson's wake will also be held Monday and the funeral will take place Tuesday at the Church of Saint Clare on Staten Island.
