The FDNY is working to help residents avoid the dangers of house fires with a new initiative.
"We're giving out batteries for people with existing smoke detectors and we're trying to sign people up with the Red Cross to have detectors installed in their homes," says Nick Calabro, of the FDNY.
Ernestine Moore, 82, and a 76-year-old neighbor died in the fire.
Officials say the fire started early Friday morning at the home on Patchen Street. It took crews hours to get it under control in the frigid weather.
