A lithium-ion battery could be the cause of a Flatbush fire that destroyed one local business and displaced residents Tuesday, according to the FDNY.

The fire broke out at the corner of E. 21st Street and Cortelyou Road just before 7 a.m..

Video obtained by News 12 shows smoke coming from the bottom floor where the bodega is. Residents say they woke up to the sound of alarms going off.

The FDNY tells News 12 a lithium-ion battery was found at the scene. There is no word on whether it was found in the shop or the apartments above.

Neighbors waking up for their first coffee of the year were shocked to see the aftermath of the fire instead.

“It’s not anything that we thought could happen for the first, the first of the new year," said Ian Sweetness, a Flatbush resident.

According to fire officials, no one was injured in the fire. The Red Cross says they are currently assisting two people in finding temporary housing.
